In a pride, only
the females hunt. They work together, with a few lions laying in wait while the
rest of the pride chases the prey toward them. The lions seen here are patient
hunters, lurking in the nearby grass as the waterbuck come to drink and graze. |
|
| Lions
can run up to 40 miles per hour, but only in short bursts since they tire easily.
Once the females kill the prey, the adult males chase the them away and eat first.
After the males are finished eating, the females can feed. | The
cubs eat last. Subsequently, they often starve during periods of drought, when
prey is scarce. |
