The
largest land animal on the planet is the African elephant. A large bull weighs
up to 11,000 lbs (5000 kg) and can eat 300 lbs (135 kg) of food a day. One thing
elephants can't do is jump, but every other mammal can.
These
birds pick parasites off the elephants' backs. The guideline seems to be one-bird-per-elephant.
Elephants
grow a new set of molars to grind food every 10 years, but only grow 6 sets in
their lifetime. As a result, elephants older than 60 can only 'gum' their food
and eventually die of starvation.
