The Equator
As we arc south back towards Nairobi, we stop at the Equator, where we witness a simple but intriguing demonstration of the Earth's magnetic shift.

We walk 20 meters north of the Equator. Our "teacher" pours water into a funnel. It drains clockwise. We walk 20 meters south of the Equator and see it swirl counterclockwise. Amazingly, directly ON the equator, the water just swishes back and forth as it dribbles into the plastic cup below. I was not only impressed by the experiment, but by the fact that our teacher allowed none of the water to fall wasted on the ground, recycling it all back into the jug for his next lesson.
